Thirty years ago, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) reported the first cases of AIDS in Los Angeles. Since then, countless organizations and initiatives across the United States have been launched in efforts to stop the spread of HIV. In 1985, a program office of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health was established to help fight the epidemic here in Southern California. For the past 26 years, the Office of AIDS Programs and Policy has worked in concert with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the California State Office of AIDS to prevent new infections and to provide treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Today, through continuous community outreach, grassroots promotions, and multi-media advertising, the County-wide initiative called Erase Doubt aims to increase HIV testing in Los Angeles County, drive awareness of HIV prevention, and provide information about HIV/AIDS care treatment resources.
In January 2011, Erase Doubt launched a casting call in search of everyday people in Los Angeles County to model in its 2011 advertising campaign. Volunteers across the County stepped up to help in the effort. In the coming months, you’ll see their faces and images on many of our marketing and outreach materials.
Erase Doubt is excited to launch its next phase of the campaign! Through powerful creative, advocacy, and community education this campaign aims to encourage individuals to assess their own risk for contracting HIV, learn their status by taking an HIV test, and if necessary get treated. By erasing doubt about your HIV status and by taking steps to prevent the spread of HIV you are becoming part of the larger solution that will someday lead to an end of the epidemic. It’s starts with you!
